Ethernet cable is the popular yet slightly incorrect term used for referring to unshielded twisted pair or UTP cables. Ethernet is today by far the most popular network protocol used in Local Area Networks or LANs. There are various kinds of UTP cables, sorted in Categories defining their capacity, currently CAT5 being the most widespread. The cables are connected to switches, routers and computer network adapters with RJ45 connectors.

To the lesser technically interested user an Ethernet cable is simply a cable for connecting computers together and to the Internet.
