Summary

Call of Duty 2 is the highly acclaimed sequel to Infinity Ward's original World War 2 themed shooter, available for PC and Xbox 360. It is not to be confused with Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, a similarly themed shooter released for the current-generation consoles like Xbox and PlayStation 2.

The single-player campaign follows the story of 4 soldiers from 3 different nationalities as the war progresses. First are 3 missions from the Russian campaign, where we battle in the streets of Stalingrad and on the outskirts of Moscow as private Vassili Ivanovich Koslov. Next up is the British campaign, consisting of 2 infantry missions and 1 tank mission in the deserts of northern Africa, and 1 infantry mission in Normandy. For the infantry missions we assume the role of sergeant John Davis, and the tank mission puts us in the shoes of commander David Welsh. Finally in the American campaign we land on the beaches of Normandy and cross the Rhine advancing into German territory as corporal Bill Taylor.

Reviews

Call of Duty 2 was widely received to great acclaim. Its graphics engine on the Xbox 360 was developed separately from the engine of the PC version, and as such manages to take some advantage of the hardware. This is especially noticeable in smoke and explosion effects which are some of the best ever seen in any game.

Most reviews praised the game but failed to notice the lacklustre implementation of the game's Xbox Live multiplayer facilities. This can probably be accredited to the fact that most reviews were written before the console launch date, as such making these shortcomings less noticeable. IGN later published their visions on this on this with a sharp article.

  • IGN ranked the game 9.0/10
  • Gamespot ranked the game 8.8/10
